About ARCVic
ARCVic was established in Victoria in 1987 by a group of people with anxiety disorders and family members who recognised the importance of peer and family support in breaking down the isolation, alienation, confusion and despair that affect many people and families living with anxiety disorders.
The first goal of the group was therefore to provide activities and services that helped people to feel connected, supported and hopeful.
This goal has continued to provide the impetus for the growth and development of the organisation over the next eighteen years, leading to the establishment of a state-wide network of support groups, a telephone counselling helpline, social groups, support networks, recovery and educational programs, conferences and seminars and many other activities.
Over the years, ARCVic has helped and supported more than 60,000 people living with anxiety disorders, and has also assisted several thousand professionals and organisations through educational activities, professional development, research support and consultations. In recognition of the need for ARCVic's services to the community, and the high standards of the organisation, ARCVic was funded by Human Services Victoria in 1996 and integrated into the Psychiatric Disability Rehabilitation and Support Services of Victoria's mental health system. ARCVic continues to be an independent, non-profit organisation, and relies on the essential support of its members and volunteers to provide support services to the more than 600,000 adults and children in Victoria with anxiety disorders, and their families.
ARCVic's mission is to foster the emotional, mental and social well-being of people living with anxiety disorders; and to empower people with support, knowledge and skills that will build resilience and recovery, and reduce the impact of anxiety disorders on people's lives.
ARCVic's Committee of Management includes consumers, carers and professionals. ARCVic has partnerships and active working relationships with peak mental health organisations and networks, psychology/medical departments in Universities and Hospitals, and other agencies, clinics and community health and mental health services. Many mental health professionals are actively involved in ARCVic's work and services, and collaborate in various research projects and educational activities. ARCVic maintains associations with other anxiety disorders organisations that operate interstate and overseas.
